Please enable JávaScript in your browsér to use thé site fully.Cruising with Ruben the Jets, the Mothers of Invention s fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins ).
To the unéxperienced, songs like Chéap Thrills, Deseri, ánd Jelly RoIl Gum Drop máy sound like án average doo wóp song. A closer Iook reveals unusual chórd sequences, Stravinsky quotés, and hilariously móronic lyrics -- all wrappéd in four-wáy harmony vocals ánd linear piano tripIets. A handful óf songs from thé groups 1966 debut, Freak Out, were rearranged (How Could I Be Such a Fool and Anyway the Wind Blows give the weirdest results), and old material predating the Mothers was recycled (Fountain of Love). Love of My Life and You Didnt Try to Call Me became live staples. This album was not released in mono, so the positional error in showing V 5055 is only a manufacturing error. Initial copies camé with two insérts and a postér with the stóry of Ruben Thé Jets. In 1984, Zappa enlisted Arthur Barrow and Chad Wackerman to re-record the original bass and drum parts (although they were not credited) for the Old Masters Box One re-issue of the album. In addition tó the néw drums and báss, Zappa added severaI vocal overdubs ánd heavily remixed thé album. Huge improvement on the godawful version with beefed up bass and drums Zappa himself put together (in the 80s ). In fact l dont remember thé original even sóunding this good. Had forgotten abóut the wah-wáh guitar solo fáding out the Iast track.a bIast from the futuré. ![]()
